Zilla-mat Permanent?

Is it a good idea to use products like zillamat on the cab floor? I would like some sound insulation but what about if one has to ever work on floor rust issues? Does it come off once you stick it down? Is there a product you dont have to glue down?

Good day Cancow,

I put Zillamat on my cab floor, and it's extremely sticky stuff. Pulling it off seems like it could be a major job, although solvents might help some. The best answer is probably that yeah, it's permanent.

By sticking tightly to the sheet metal, Zillamat's supposed to keep the sheet metal from vibrating, and it seems to do a great job of that. As Terry observed in his thread which originally brought Zillamat to the attention of many of us, it's best to lay down Zillamat for vibration dampening, and layer traditional sound deadening material on top of that.

There are materials that you don't have to glue down that you could install, yet with the sheet metal susceptible to vibration it may or may not result in an end result that you like. I think that Rich (1972hiboy) had good results from this method though, since he found a floor mat that had a layer of sound deadening material fastened to its underside. It made a big difference for him.

Thanks robroy. Sounds like zilla mat would be good for my doors, but I am still on the fence with the floor idea.

Yes there are other options. Here's what I used in my truck and I really like it. It will come up when the time comes for me to do my cab resto also. I'm sad to say this lifetime A/C guy can't tell you the brand or even the name of the insulation material though... :oops:

Hi Cancow,

I agree with Robroy that the Zilla mat would be pretty difficult to remove. Same for any of the self-adhesive sound deadener/dampners like Dynamat, Hushmat, etc. Extremely sticky stuff!!! It's purpose is not necessarily "sound proof" the vehicle but to eliminate/reduce vibration. The additional layers on top are what creates the sound barrier. It looks like what Basketcase has is either a layer of jute insulation or a dense material/fiber type of insulation. In my opinion, if didn't want to have something installed that was pretty "permanent" like the Zillamat, I would put down a layer of jute insulation,like what Basketcase has, and just apply a few dabs of trim adhesive in a few spots to hold it in place. Any insulation will help and this solution would come right up when you want to pull it out. My :2cents:

Thanks Terry. That sounds like what I will do. I can just imagine having to weld someday with half the adhesive still on the floor. Would Jute with a foil side be the way to go?

You don't have to do the foil backed jute, it is supposed to have some heat suppression qualities so that is what I went with. Plus it didn't seem to cost anything additional or it was minimal.

I bought some sound deadening materal called "quick roof" at Home Depot to use in my doors. Its the same as zillamat but comes in a 25' roll and its 8" wide to make it easy to install inside the doors. Its super sticky and bonds like crazy, After i installed it in my doors i smacked the outside of the door with my hand to hear the differance and it was like night and day, No more sounding like a drum. Quick roof has a yellow wraper and is about the size of a gallon can, Check it out next time your at Home Depot.
