Refinished my steering wheel/column

Post by sublimer »

Finally finished redoing my steering wheel and refinishing a steering column :woohoo:

Before: (1 of about 5 cracks I needed to fix, not to mention the engravings)

They didn't turn out perfect, but for spray paint and some clear coat, I can't complain :D

I may hit it up with some 2000 grit real light, but we'll see. I can't wait to install it, but I need to get bearings and all for the column first. It's from a 73, but the steering wheel and shaft are from a 68 and it's being installed in a 68. I'll post more pics in a few weeks once I get this baby installed! Wish me luck for the "unknowns."

Hey, thanks!

I filled the cracks with Quik Steel. It's like $5 at any autoparts store and works really well! Some tips...

1. Use a dremel and make the cracks bigger! Sounds weird, but make them about 2 times larger and deep...all the way through. This gives the Quik Steel something to hold onto.
2. Use files and sand paper...I finished with 1000 and 2000 grit paper. This was tricky because I painted it once, realized I needed to sand more and had to back up a little bit. Sand more than you think you need.
3. Take your time, I can't emphasize this enough.
