Speedometer/odometer off

Post by theogre5150 »

My speedometer reads 5 miles off (fast) and my odometer reads .01 off (fast). This happened when I replaced my transmission with a 4 spd od from an 86 f150 and a mph gauge from a 67 f600 dump truck. Thoughts?

I haven't dug that far down on my truck yet, but where does the speedometer attach? If it's the driveshaft, then it's either the F600 speedo, the gearing in the rear, or the tire size. I figure that if it's less than a 10% change, it's in the noise (it's off 5MPH, but at what speed?). If you know how to compensate your speed, then it shouldn't be a problem. If the odometer is off by 10 miles every 1000 driven, then it's also not enough to worry about. But then again, since my truck's fuel gauge goes down just sitting in the driveway, I can't afford to drive more that 5K miles a year!

Just my two cents,

Eric,
If you remove the cable from the tranny you'll find a plastic gear on the end of the cable. I can't remember the way to calculate, (there is a way) but NPD and DC both sell the different gears to compensate for that-as well as for dealing with different tire sizes. Their different dolor-distinguished the different gear.
Once again here is "the pot calling the kettle black" as mine's been off since I built the truck a year or so ago. And I have three or four of these here. :P

:yt: Assuming you're not on bald tires or plan to increase tire size, count the teeth you have on your speedo gear, and order one with one more tooth than you already have. As big gears go slower than little ones. There is a great big long mathematical computation for all this as well, but darned if know how to go about it. I almost hate to bring this up, but mine too is 5 mph fast, but I plan on increasing tire size a bit, hopefully soon, which will compensate for it as well.

The gear I'm using is from the 86 f150. I have wanted to replace all of the gauges with new ones. If I do this, shouldn't the new speedo work properly?
