68 F100 installed new clutch and does not work
Hi, Just signed up today. I have a 68 f100 that I am trying to put back on the road after I rescued it from sitting on a Texas farm for 10 years. After replacing all the usual stuff to get it running I found out the ring gear on the flywheel was shot so I pulled the motor replaced the ring gear, re-surfaced the flywheel and installed a new clutch and pressure plate. Put it all back together and now the trans won't go into gear with the engine running and clutch pedal depressed. The pedal and rod and arm all look to be working properly. The pedal feels like there is not much resistance. I never had the truck running before this so don't know what to expect. When I push down the pedal and try to put it in gear it just grinds me out. When the truck is turned off it goes through the gear positions no problem. Seems like the clutch is not releasing from the flywheel and pressure plate. Any suggestions?? Thanks and looking forward to contributing to the forum.

Sounds to me like it was adjusted out for a worn clutch. Not sure of all the tech terms, but the pointed piece that goes on the clutch arm has a nut on it that adjusts the travel. Just back it off till you get it where the pedal releases about 1/4-1/3 of the way up. Should be fine. Maybe someone else can explain it better than I.

Re: 68 F100 installed new clutch and does not work
Thanks, I thought about that but seems like the travel of the clutch arm is moving all the way back when the pedal is depressed to the floor. I tried to push the arm back further when my friend was holding the pedal down but it would not move any more. Seems like the throw out bearing is not putting enough force on the pressure plate spring to move release the clutch. Looking forward to more comments. Thanks

Any chance you put the clutch disc in backwards?

Why is it that there's seldom time to fix it right the first time, but there's always time to fix it right the second time???

Try adjusting it, as it will take a lot of force to push the clutch arm by hand, as the foot clutch pedal has mechanical advantage over it. Try it and see, it's the only way to really know if it will go far enough or if you have other problems.

Re: 68 F100 installed new clutch and does not work
Thanks, Is it possible to put the disc on the wrong way? It appeared offset of the springs would only allow it to go one way. I wondered about that and I will only know one way. I will pull the motor again and check it. I used a steel rod to push on the clutch arm to check its travel and it is moving all the way back with the pedal. Thanks

Pulled the motor again and I have to believe the clutch was installed correctly. The clutch disc will only fit flush against the flywheel on one side. I will now replace the throw out bearing and try again.....

Sorry, just read your post and you've probably already killed this snake but I had a similar problem and turned out to be the same issue Robroy had awhile back http://www.fordification.com/forum/view ... ot#p387682 I followed his instructions and did the same thing to mine. Worked like a charm. Also some good pics of the clutch fork install. Thanks!
