Re: Add on OD
Yes, there is a company that makes what you want. Unfortunately, it costs more than our trucks are worth. I can't remember who makes it though. Do a search in this forum and it will turn up.

Re: Add on OD
Gear vendors is the most well known way to get what you're after, but there's potentially a cheaper way.
Gear Vendors design is based off of a Volvo unit that has been produced for decades. Supposedly the Volvos are still just as strong if not more so. You can simply get ahold of one of the used units, then machine or buy an adapter for your specific need and go for it. It's possible that with a bit of research you could get it done for as cheaply as 500 to 1000, compared to the $3,000+ that GV wants.

Re: Add on OD
The Volvo unit is good, but the Gearvendors is an updated unit with a larger output shaft, and I think an improved solenoid and pump.
I'd think with the torque of the FE, a Gearvendors unit would be stronger. They also have a short C6 version for the trucks having the short fixed-yoke output, looks like it'll all fit with only the shortening of the front driveshaft. A pretty easy install, kit has all adapters and fasteners. A larger trans cooler is a must.
If I can find an extra $3K or so, I'll be fitting a GV to my 300/C6, and use a manual switch and relay similar to what my '72 Volvo had.

Re: Add on OD
See for me I have a factory optioned 3 speed manual with the borg warner overdrive. Kinda of a funky unit and getting parts for it is near impossible but I love it.

Its easier and cheaper to go to the salvage yard and grab a 2.47 or 2.76 pumpkin out of a Lincoln or a full size Ford/Merc. I dont tow or haul heavy loads so thats my route.

Re: Add on OD
For those that do tow or like the torque for fast take offs the low ratio gears are not an option though. I've had 3.00 in my 17 behind the 460 and that is the lowest I'll go. Currently going to a 3.50 gear since I won"t have to use the truck for a daily driver much longer. I would love to one day go with a Gear Vendor unit

Re: Add on OD
I love the 2.47 gears behind the 460. It will pull what most people need and you can pull in second gear since the rear gear is so high. As for as the gear vendor, I love mine and have mine setup on a switch. On ebay look up this seller. http://www.ebay.com/itm/FORD-MODEL-A-OV ... d=ViewItem I have talked to him many times and bought a fully rebuilt unit from him with adapter for around $1700. The real cost of these setups are the adapters. Gearvendors has the market wrapped up on these and when you need one you have to send them your old one or be charged like $300 extra for the adapter. If I was running a f100 with a 9" I would change to a 2.47 or 2.75 gear for the highway.

Re: Add on OD
Sorry, I don't understand your post Gregamorton. Do you like running 2:47 gears behind a gear vendor unit on a 460, or do you run 2:47 gears behind a 460 and a C-6? Seems like with a gear vendor unit you would want something like 4:11 rear gears???

Re: Add on OD
I like the 2.47s with the nine inch. I run my gear vendor behind my 7.3idi c6 combo with 3.73 dana 60. The gear vendor is the way to go on the f250 and f350s. With the half ton trucks it makes more sense to go with high way gears in the 9" as you can get gears from 2.47 all the way up to high 6.00s. In my own opinion half ton trucks are good to drive and pull small loads safely and do ok with high gears. If you have the money to blow and want the best of both worlds get a gear vendor and run 4.10s.
