71' f 100' 302 ' 4 SPEED WONT SHIFT.

:help: :help: :help: OK! SO I GOT THE LINKAGE BACKED ALLL THE WAY OUT ON MY CLUTCH PEDAL.. the truck will grind gears trying to shift.. do i need to replace the clutch?????

Not sure if it is the same problem I had. When I did my 4x4, it would not shift into gear. I went to Napa auto pats and got a longer adjustment link. Works great now.

ive done that & the arm that goes in the tranmission wont move back any mo.. when i did force it back and pushed in the clutch pedal it was way to stiff ta push in... :? :? :? :? it didnt feel right..

Do any clutch work recently? When did this problem start?

Usually you need to replace the clutch because it wont engage the tranny. Your having the the opposite problem of not disengaging.

Somethings wrong somewhere in between the clutch arm, throwout bearing, and pressure plate. (or a clutch disc put on backwards / wrong disc)

ok got the new clutch in. and now we cant get the tranny lined up... help

You did use a pilot tool to align the clutch disk with the pilot bearing didnt you?

Like Charlie asked, be sure and line the clutch disc up with a pilot tool first. Get two 6" lengths of all thread rod (I believe it's 7/16-14 but take a bolt with you to be sure) from your local home improvement or hardware store, and a couple of nuts to match. Screw the rods into the bottom two holes of the bell housing mounts to the block. Now you can lift your transmission and slide it on the rods, up to just barely touching the clutch disc and screw the nuts on to hold in place. Like this, you can manipulate and tweak the alignment of the input shaft to the clutch disc and pilot bearing without having to hold it up yourself. Things to keep in mind...the rods will flex tilting the transmission so that the input shaft is pointing upwards a little. Use a jack under the tail to hold it up at the right angle. The weight of the transmission will cause the engine block to tilt down so the tranny needs to be at about the same angle. Back the tranny off so it doesn't touch the clutch disc. Ease it forward until you feel it "kiss" the clutch disc. Put it in gear and rotate the yoke end until you feel it bump the splines in the disc. Wiggle it up and down and slide it forward. DO NOT use the nuts on the rods to cram it in!
