Tranny swap t-18 to c-4 or c-6

Post by Sunwings »

1969 f100 has the T-18 3 speed + granny. I am looking to swap out the t-18 and do a temp replacement with a c-4/c-6 tranny while the other will be torn down and rebuilt.
The tranny will be bolted up to a 300-i6 . I am not worried about the linkages/brackets or the cooler. that is taken care of. what I need to know what do I need to do to swap out just the transmissions.
I know about about changing the the flywheel to flex plate.
I do not know if I can use the same cross member and drive shaft. This is a daily driver and I do have a good c-6 tranny here and a c-4 that I can use if i need to.
the next thing I do not know if I can use the same 2 piece drive shaft that I have.
Later on this truck will be restored to its original state.

Any help would be appreciated.

one last thing , were would be the best place to buy a rebuild kit for the t-18? new bearings, and bushings?

you'll need an auto trans starter, and the front half of your driveshaft shortened if you can't locate one from an automatic truck
you can use the existing trans x-member and the tranny mount

-i should add that you might have to move the x-member and drill a couple of new holes in the frame, but that would be pretty obvious when you got that far along

well I will not be doing that. I did decide to have a friend take out the old tranny and we found the problem were the front bearing housing was loose. it tore up the main input shaft . so now it is time for a rebuild.
