Old Air Products Underdash Slimline Air conditioner??

Post by jamesrtw »

Has anyone install the add-on AC unit made by Old Air Products? It's this unit here: http://www.oldairproducts.com/catalog/1 ... -4362.html

Just wanting to hear some thoughts if it cooled the cab down decently and also if you were able to keep your glovebox insert? Also IF you had a manual transmission, did it clear the shift lever?

Thanks ahead of time for any info you guys have.

I wish I could help you out with how it works but it is still in the box downstairs. When I get the replacement cab done it will go in. My truck is a auto so I cant help you there either.

Not the answer you are looking for but I just had the Classic Auto Air Perfect Fit installed. Granted I am not the best wrencher, but I am glad I paid someone to install it. A few mods were needed to mount the compressor & condensor to my truck. The radiator overflow had to be moved as well. I have a 68 F250 auto with PS with no original AC. One vent/register on driver side, one on passenger side and two in the middle. Cools down the cab very quickly. I chose Classic over the other options as their system uses the original controls and your heat is new to boot. The original look is what I am going for. No regrets so far except I am in way too deep now but that's the case with most "classic" cars. Hope my 3 year old appreciates it as it will be hers one day.

I was looking at their website link you gave me. It really tucks up under the dash tight. That makes it look real nice.

I'm looking forward to when you install it! Let me know what you think of it at that point. If you don't mind, maybe snap a couple of pics of it while you are installing it. :D

WIth the Classic Auto Air System you will not have any clearance or air flow issues with a standard transmission. But - my glove box is more or less gone. Very minimal storage and I had to mount the emergency flashers in a vertical position. I will see if I can get some pics this weekend

Note that those are "AC only" systems so you'll still need to keep your existing heater box and installation. Just thought I'd point that out. This one is heat/cool/defrost complete http://www.oldairproducts.com/catalog/1 ... -4363.html I've been eyeing this AC only unit for a while now http://www.nostalgicairparts.com/air-co ... em-293.php

Sargentrs you are correct. I wanted to keep my factory heater controls (1967) as I live in Alberta so it can and has snowed in July before, so I went with the under dash unit. I was going to get the nostalgic air one you posted but I bought the old air from a very nice guy I found on here from Alabama. I had it shipped to Montana for dirt cheap then drove the 2 hours to pick it up. I hope the cab will be ready to put on this summer but I will have to see how it goes. I have a soon to be 5 year old boy that I try to spend as much time with as I can, you never know when your or there time is up(I have lost one) so I work on the truck when I can.

I agree. I've got grandkids living with me and nothing's more important than playing and talking with them. When u get around to the install be sure and post it so we can see how it's done. :D

The Classic Auto Air is new AC and Heat. Used the defrost on low this morning in Houston (35-38 deg) and it was like the heat was on. 3 min and I was good to go. That cab got hot quick

I'm impressed with your description of it. It sounds like a really nice product.

I was going to rebuild my stock heater box and then add aftermarket AC to the truck, but after reading your posts and then looking at the Classic setup with everything new, for a few hundred dollars more, I might as well get the entirely new system and put that in the truck instead. Thanks for sharing and the review! Would love to see some pictures of your install.

You won't be disappointed at all with the classic auto air. It works great and looks like it was a factory install. My friend had one installed in his 68 and it works just as good or better than my 2008 Camry heat and air. It also uses your factory heat only controls. I am getting the Classic air set up when tax time comes and hope I get it in my 69 before summer. Just thought you guys would like to know that they do work great.

After doing some more research on add-on AC Units. That Classic Auto Air system has another bonus going for it. Pre-Crimped AC lines. It looks like the other systems you would need to go out and get your lines crimped by someone with a special tool. I've been reading some horror stories of auto parts stores not being able to, AC shops not wanting to do it, and the crimping tool costing a lot of money. So while the classic auto air unit is expensive, I'm starting to see some more benefits to it.

I called Classic Auto Air yesterday and I am already budgeting out my expected tax return. They are in Texas and the complete cost of the A/C and Heat system with shipping to me in California is $1403.50. So it is on my list of things I will be buying when the tax return gets here.

It's funny, because I don't look at it as being THAT expensive (compared to other AC systems), but then reality sets in when I realize that is only $1000 less than what I paid for the entire truck!
