Holy Cow!! Check this out! Convertible Crew Cab in SoCal!

Post by Calfdemon »

This is not mine, and I am posting this so people can see it, not so much as an advertisement... I would NEVER do this to a perfectly good Crew Cab, but since it is already done, I have to say, it looks pretty cool and they seem to have done a good job with it (for what you can see with the pics).. But talk about forever changing a rare truck!

http://losangeles.craigslist.org/lac/ct ... 47269.html

For the amount of work that went into making this truck, he is not asking for a whole lot of money. I kinda like it.. I would never built it, but I like it. Looks like there are snaps for a cover for when it is parked too, shaved door handles, and the paint looks pretty good (condition, not design)...

Well, its not really a convertable. Its got no top!

I guess in So Cal that would work, but not here.

Same baby blue as my truck, think I'll leave mine one color......

Love it, except for the top! He has the top on it in the two pics of the bed, (facing the front of the truck). I had a similar convertible top made for my 76' early Bronco and easily had a "window" sewn into the canvas.
Never seen a crew convertible in all my years here either. Thanks for posting it Rich.

That is just so different from the run of the mill bump.
I like it.
It would be fun to cruise around in.

Thanks for putting this up.

Good day Rich,

Thanks so much for calling attention to this. Needless to say topless Bumpsides are rare!

From time to time I've thought of making #50 topless. I love the idea of driving around right out in the elements, at least for joy-rides.

I agree that the asking price seems quite low. Maybe he knows how few people would be interested in such a topless creation--all the better for those that are.

I think it's cool. Wish he had posted a side view with the top up so we could see how that looks.

Im not so sure that it is a top, as much as it is a cover. I do not think you can drive the truck with that top on it. The snaps that hold the top down go all the way along the top of the front doors and then it looks like it goes up to the windshield. I do not see how you would be able to drive under that top as there doesn't look like there would be any headroom. Probably explains why there is no back window either. I think that is just a storage top to keep stuff out of the cab area.

Hmmm...add a couple of roll bars and a bikini top, 12" lift kit, some gumbo mudders and 4wd and he might have something.

Its funny because I would NEVER do that to a rare crew cab, and have strong opinions about that. BUT... since it was already done, I would definitely drive that thing! I like it and they did a very good job with it. I like to think that the roof was soooooo rotted, that this was done to pretty much save the truck and make it usable again.

It goes right along with my desire to make a rat rod style hotrod out of a crew cab truck as well. I would NEVER destroy a crew cab to do it, but if the truck was heading to the crusher, and the cab was still good, then I could justify doing it! Someday, the below creation will exist... Even if I have to use 2 standard cabs to do it (which is how Ford made the bump era crew cabs anyway...). Using 2 cabs is probably the better plan anyway as the rear doors for the crew cabs are irreplaceable and I would not use rear doors in that creation. I could just use solid glass for the rear and they would not need to roll down.

This truck is back up for sale here: http://losangeles.craigslist.org/lac/ct ... 29780.html

There are a bunch of new pictures of it up there. The crazy thing that I didn't realize before is this is an F350 which is the same as mine. Look at how damn long that truck is!! My crew is the same length but this one looks so much longer without the roof on it. Either way, this truck (and mine) is a land yacht!!

This truck really is well priced for how much work is in to this truck. The downfall is not having a roof that you can put on it making it a fair weather toy only. But really, this thing is cool.

I still think a bikini top is do-able. A small diameter roll bar mounted behind the rear seat and attached to the top of the windshield with a couple of posts going down behind the front seat. Mount a canvas top for a 4 door jeep on it and cruise in the shade.

The one thing that I noticed which I am going to look into, is he put armrests on the rear doors. The way the rear doors are cut and put together internally, I am not sure how he was able to do that. I have the stock plastic squares that go around the door handle, but if I can get the armrests on there like he did, that might be a better option.
