Is the hole threaded for shoulder harness?

Post by Kurt Combs »

I am thinking about three point seat belts, but I thought I heard somewhere that the holes behind the rubber plug in the B pillar isn't threaded from the factory. Anyone know if the hole in 72 F-250 would be threaded? Of course if I wasn't a lazy old guy I suppose I could pull the plug and look.......just didn't want to pry it out if I should decide to stick with the lap belts.

Good evening Kurt,

They weren't threaded on mine. The adventures I endured to put three-point seat belts in my '72 F250 are documented here: May I ask for advice on Beam's 140" WSCH300 seat belts?

In my 72 the holes were NOT threaded, I used the shoulder mounting bolts from a late 70's Ford car to mount my shoulder belts. the bolts were self tapping, I took my 1/2 air hammer and ran them in, then back out, them mounted the belt's. It worked like a charm and only took a few minutes to do both sides.

My 72 had one hole threaded, and one wasnt... My 69 has 3 threaded and 1 that isnt... I am thinking they were SUPPOSED to be threaded, but it was one of those corners that the assembly line worker could cut and never get called on because no one was running shoulder belts back then. So the answer is that yours may or may not be threaded... lol

Mine weren't. Was easy to tap threads, but was surprising that they were unthreaded.

Thanks for the replies, I'll plan on tapping the holes out when I install belts.

Mine were threaded in my '70 F-250. I understand some are and some aren't. My retractable seat belt install was a piece of cake.

they're threaded in the 70 cab on my truck right now
they were also threaded in the (previous)68 merc cab and original 69 cab
running a tap through em is a good plan, the threads in the 70 cab were pretty crusty
- still got my first first car 20+yrs later : 69 f100 sorta kinda pretending its a Mercury M100 w/a 70 f350 sport custom cab (factory buckets) 67 grille with 69 ranger cooneyes 68 merc box and hood, some supercool fiberglass fenders i scored way back when, 76 f150 disc brake frontend..currently running a 90 5.0HO 4bbl/c4 auto & 3.50 posi...originally a 360/c6 f100 Ranger with dealer added towpack (incl. kelsey hays trailer brake),boxside toolbox, behind the seat stowage & belly tank...only original parts left on 'er are the frame, rear end, rear springs, and rear bumper...

So, for those who have converted to the shoulder harness, do you like it, hate it, so-so, ... ? Just curious; I haven't decided which way to go yet.

Just knowing that my head wont fly forward and hit that wheel and dash if I get in a wreck makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. So for safety's sake, I love it.

i like having the shoulder belt,i dont slide around on the seat nearly as much when i'm driving like a psychopath and i no longer have to explain that the truck only came with lapbelts when officer friendly decides to stop me for a chat either .

I swear the factory buckets i have are upholstered with teflon or something, they're at least 3 times as slippery as the heavy duty vinyl bench i used to have - nearly killed myself hopping into the thing a couple of times now and have actually slid right off the seat while doing a quick road test after doing some ignition and carb work

My 70's are threaded. I am not crazy about impailing myself on the steering column in a head on.....thousands in dental work too so steering wheels dont need to be on my dining menu. I will be converting over to them soon, need some money to buy them after market. I drive my old bump between 8,000 - 10,000 miles per year...... About to go put some new tires on her. Firestone transforce makes a 9.00 x 16.5 tire in a 10 ply. Gonna give them a try and stay with original rims for a few more years.

Yeah, but without headrests your old noggin will fly backwards and hit the back window. That (and the gas tank behind the seat) makes me nervous.

All 4 holes on my '70 crew cab were threaded. I installed 4 shoulder harnesses for me and my family. It was a breeze to install.
