A/C Performance question

Post by Gettysburg150 »

Did some searching and couldn't find anything so I'm sorry if this has already been covered :hmm:

I see there are a good bit of options available for air conditioning in our trucks but want to know how well they work. I am going to make a crew cab and I know its going to be more difficult to get it cool in that big of an area.

Anyone who has a/c how well does yours work and what system are you using? What is more important for cooling efficiency, evaporator size or condenser size?

Well from my experience, I like the original factory AC installed in my truck. It's charged with 134A and does a pretty good job. I would think it would do equally well in a crewcab.

I think you will be very limited in size for BOTH the condenser and evaporator...not too many choices out there. The condenser especially takes up most of the little space available behind the grill. And there isn't a lot of room on the inside of the cab for a larger evaporator.

Since I installed mine over 15 years ago, I noticed that Classic Auto Air is advertising high efficiency evaporators, which may be better than what was available since my install. You may wish to contact them since they have loads of experience and can help you sort out what you should do.

Good luck!

Thank you, I will look into this. One more question, how cool will your cab get when the temperature gets high and where are you located? I know ambient air temperature is a major factor too and a properly working system should cool the temperature about 40 degrees depending on conditions.

I never checked it with a thermometer but it does pretty well. I'm located in Florida
