Crew cab roof skin

Post by Teacherman »

I'm in Southwest Florida and am in need of a skin for a 72 crew cab. Any leads are appreciated.

:yt: as you are going to have a VERY hard time finding an actual crew cab roof that is not part of a good crew cab. You would be better off getting a roof from an old Econoline or using the roof skin from 2 standard cabs. Cut the very rear off of one (just the slant), and the front portion off the other to get it the proper length and weld them together. That is how I have heard other CC owners have replaced their roof skins. Heck, our crew cabs were made by taking 2 standard cabs and welding them together anyway. The crew cabs were fabricated, not assembly lined.

What year Econoline? The ones I have seen have had ridges on them, and I'd prefer not to look like I am driving around in a bag of potato chips.

The Econoline option seems better because it avoids the welding two parts together step. Although, could I cut off the offending piece and weld in a standard cab roof skin?

The majority of the roof on my Crew was fine, but I did have cancer rust in the front passenger side corner... I cut out a larger portion of a standard cab roof and used it to patch the rotting area on my crew. Your absolute best solution is to use a standard cab roof to repair what you need on your crew. Only repair what you need to as you will have the hardest time trying to find an entire CC roof to use.

I agree with calfdemon if it isn't the whole roof skin that needs replaced and just around the sides I'd use a regular cab roof as a donor. I needed to replace almost my whole front across around to the sides on mine since there ain't no good usable cabs around me I just cut out the old and reshaped new patches in hardest part was the corners as I wanted to use as little filler as needed came out good and just needed a skim coat to smooth everything out.
