Based on the LMC catalog, I don't think the 70 grille insert will fit the 71. The 71 & 72 grille inserts appear to be interchangeable.

They will fit but it just looks a little off. I put '71 inserts in my '70 for awhile. The bottom stuck out about 1/2" past the grill but the top was flush. I would assume the opposite is true going the other direction. Not too sure about the steering wheels either. The steering shaft on the '71-72 is about 1/2" longer because the steering wheel mount is deeper recessed. You have to cut off the top of the steering shaft to mount a '70 and earlier steering wheel on '71-72 or the horn button won't mount for interference. There may be enough thread on the '70 shaft to mount the '71 though. Halfway down thus page http://www.fordification.com/tech/67-72ID_01.htm
