Re-start, when did it stop? Both my truck and Jeep have one. Kinda a necessary option on a 4x4 IMO.

I've had my trusty old Cobra 148-GTL since 1985 and it's been in most of my vehicles working just fine.
I will admit that it's certainly like a ghost town on the air. To bad though I had a lot of fun using it with all of my Buddies although.

Oh well times change and they are cyclicle...

all along I-5, the main truckers channel is 17. not too many people on 19 here anymore.
I use the ones in my work trucks al the time for info and traffic reports. but the one in my personal truck hardly ever gets turned on.
I get tired of listening to the guys that talk just because they can, even when nobody is listening.

When I was over there trucking, we always ran 17 North and South, and 19 East and West. It was pretty cluttered back then, so I'm kinda glad the "craze" has worn off... we still use them alot here for work in the trucks, along with our "high band" radios.

I live off Hwy 101 here in Washington st. and we all run on 14 out here. Lots of log trucks and chip haulers. It's the only road we have out here [except for logging roads] so most of us locals use them alot. But yes, there is alot of crap on them to. Gets annoying.

They were intended for information broadcasting and calling for help. Talking a bit was alright but now you can catch people talking that sound like daytime talkshows, Come back.

When I lived in San Diego California which is near the Mexican (real near!) you couldn't help but hear the mexicans talking on the CB! Judging from the conversations (I speak and understand spanish) their using the CB as a telephone.
I guess the phone system is more of a luxury then a neccesity like it is here. :dk:

cbs are good for watching for cops on the highway and getting help as well as getting info about scales and road conditions. thats about the extent of them anymore. cell phones are the future. especially nextel phones. the private citizen band radios. lets not forget about the ham radio though.

Wanting to keep in touch with my daughter (being divorced is a B---h!) I thought a hand-held CB for each of us would be a good idea. It was fun way to BS and catch-up on her day - till I realized how the CB channels went down hill in the 20 years I'd been off the airwaves.

Apparently the CB airwaves are unmonitored by the FCC so they've degenerated into a potty mouthed sewer here in W. PA. Turns out that the local kids who couldn't afford cell phones so they use it as a private way to curse at each other. Retruned the CBs to the store and got my money back.
