Low to high pinion help

Post by ianmoore10 »

I have a 72 f100 2wd im going to be putting on a 75 highboy frame. It has the low pinion dana 44, closed knuckle, power ram assist steering, and drum brakes(4.10 gears) and am going to be picking up a 1978 high pinion dana 44, open knuckle, real power steering, disk brakes(3.54 gears). I need to know if the 4.10 gears from the low pinion and other associated internals will swap over to the high pinion? I know I need the proportioning valve and master cylinder for the brakes and the steering gear box, drag link and such for the steering.
Am i missing anything to do this swap?

thanks

Ring and pinion will not match.
High and low pinion are not interchangeable.
Neither are the axle shafts. If i remember right, not much is interchangeable between a low, closed, drum front and a high, open, disc front.
Grab the track bar for the HP 44. Might be different.
Your spring perches should be in the same location, so no worries there. Might want to check those front leafs for sag before bolting up. Now would be the time to change them.
As far as steering goes i think its bolt up and go. As long as the alignment on the donor axle is still set.
Good luck.
