1969 F250 Shifter

Recently bought a 1969 F250 highboy and took put it in four wheel drive for the first time. Locked the hubs, the floor shifter seemed to engage in 4x4. However the shifter seems very loose and impossible to tell that it's shifting at all. This is an automatic transmission. Just trying to be sure I put it back in 2wd. What are the steps for putting it back in 2wd? Any help would be much appreciated as I don't want to do any damage to my new toy! Thanks, Jeff
