Knob inserts

Post by Whoaaanelly »

I looked everywhere for knob inserts to replace the battered and missing ones in my truck. Finally I decided to make my own and I'm posting this to help those of you needing the same thing. I have access to a machine shop, but all I did was turn down a solid 1"aluminum rod to the correct diameter and parted off slugs. I could have got fancy, but chose the flat, clean, look. Took me all of 15 minutes to do, so you could probably have a local shop do you up a set for as much as you'd pay if they were actually available somewhere.

Looks very nice. Maybe you should make a bunch and peddle them here.

Since I don't work in the machine shop - our tool and die maker tolerates me making the few odd things I need to handle my restorations and occasionally will do some more complex machinings for me when needed. Trust me, I don't know I'd be in this hobby as deeply had I not been here for almost 30 years. Maybe when he's off on some 3 week vacation someday I can sneak in and make a few more... if there is a need.

What about making a complete knob assembly? One-piece aluminum knob? Is that possible, could you do that?

Looks great! Now I have another "to do" on my list, Billet Knobs. It's not that I want a fancy "Billet Cruser", I just enjoy making stuff for the truck. It feels good to point and say,"I made that, and that, and..." :D
