Can't stress enough about using distilled water in our coolant systems!
You'd have to see some of the engines I've been into that have had "swamp-water" used in them!
Ryan, you can pressure test that used core with a simple garden hose hook-up, and a house water pressure gauge.
But the pressure test won't tell you the wall thickness left on the copper tubing of the core.

Thanks guys, all the info is great to know. Basketcase, if I remember reading LMC's page right they do not list a heater core for a 1970 factory A/C box. If I have read it wrong let me know, cause I would love be wrong and have a place that has them in stock.
