Door panel interchange

Post by fomocoguy »

Can someone please tell me if push in style door panels from 70-72 will interchange with the 68-up screw on style? I saw some vynil ones on ebay that look real nice and match my interior, but I want to make sure they'll fit. I assume I would just have to remove the speed nuts. Thanks!

Well, they'll fit, but you'll have to drill some holes in the inner door skin to allow you to snap the later panels on. (The screw holes for the earlier panels will be too small for the clips.) Other than that, they'd be fine.

Actually, now that I think about it, mine's a 72 and has screw on originals. (Sometimes I forget my trucks a 72 with the 69 front clip and all! ) It looks as if mine has seperate holes for the push in panels. I bet they'll work just fine.

The push in vynil covered panels must be on the better equipped models.

This is good information. I don't like the style of door panels on my 68 so I was planning to change them to the vertical vinyl versions they sell at NPD which are from 70 or 71 IIRC.

What I noticed, is that on the older deluxe-type models, the door panel was smaller and there was a larger stainless steel and black "beauty ring" surrounding the inside door panel...On the later deluxe models, the door panel was larger and the beauty ring was done away with...The doors appeared to be the same...

The door panels themselves are actually the same size by overall dimensions. But the cloth/woodgrain insert for the earlier panels IS smaller than the full-size cardboard panel.

The lower panel is what my 71 SportCustom came with except black. Mine were looking pretty bad so I put on some of the metal ones from a Custom I think. All I had to do was add the speed nuts to the holes and it screwed right on. Used them to cut the speaker holes in since I have another set.
I have the chrome pieces that go around the outside I'd like to put on someday. Only glanced at them a little but they don;t look like they just pop on. How do they mount?

I have those exact same green door panels shown in the lower picture in my truck. Anyone know if the chrome trim can be replaced? The chome "film" on my trim has peeled off badly, but otherwise the panels are perfect. I havn't seen any place online that sells that particular shaped trim, or makes replacement door panels of that style and color.

I wanna go just the opposite way...

Seeing this thread made me wonder about something...
I wanna use the the standard metal panels that came on my '68
I swapped the driver's '68 door for a '71 door...
Is there going to be any problems putting the metal panels back on ???

Kaptn, I have a '69 passenger door for my '71 and plan on using the '69 panel and trim ring ('69 custom cab) the newer door needs holes drilled for the trim ring clips, but I think the screws will still work. I only compared them for a couple minutes. May take some pics tonight to post...

If I remember.

I put the metal panels on my 71 that had the panel cover like the green one aboves Screw fit fine. I didn't use the chrome trim yet though and don't see how it'll work without drilling holes for it.

This thread is timely, I tried to put some panels from a 69 ranger on the door that I currently have which has the 70's on vinyl cover. No go without drilling the holes that keith mentioned.

That's alot of good info...

I still have the '68 door (it was crunched on the outside).
I can make a drilling template...
I have a set of black '71 style panels, but they're kinda warped and the plasta chrome is peeling.... they look pretty bad.
I wanna cover the stock metal panels with black vinyl, then use the stock chrome & black rings, they should look alot like the green ones Kieth posted except for being all black.
