Instrument Panel

Post by FormerMarine1981 »

I replaced the wiring harness in my truck a few months ago and I am still trying to work on it. I believe the wiring harness is out of a 70 and the instrument panel is out of a 72. I believe the plug for the two year models might be the same but I know the wires need to be put in the right locations. Does anyone know what color wires need to go to which location? Pictures or diagrams would be appreciated. Plus if anyone in the Austin area knows anything about wiring and is willing to come help a guy out I will provide the liquid refreshments. Thanks in advance, Ben

Not only is the '70 instrument panel connector different from the '71-'72 versions, the plugs for full-instrumentation (gauges) panel is different from the one with idiot lights on the '71-'72s.

Why are you changing panels?

I am changing panels because my original panel is a 69 and the 72 panel is in better condition and more easily adaptable to the 70 wiring harness I believe. It seems that when it comes to wiring I am usually wrong though.

You mean just the plastic bezel itself is in better shape? The bezels will interchange. You can just put your existing gauges onto the newer bezel, so you won't have to do any wiring at all.

No it's not that. The wiring harness that I have I do not have a panel for. The only compatible panel that I have the printed circuit board (I think thats what it's called) is trashed. The plastic layers are separated and the wires are broken.

I just need to get it back on the road. I don't care which year panel is in there.

It would be so much easier for you to just get the proper '70 circuit board. I believe I have one of those here, I'll have to check this weekend.
