sound systems mods

Post by F-100Ranger »

What sound system improvements have you done? What's the best I can expect to do in a bump with in-cab gas tank?

Hey F-100Ranger,

This goes back aways, but it was one of the best sounding systems I have heard in a pickup.
I mounted some Hi-Tech speakers on the bottom of the door.
They were small high quality box speakers, (about the size of surround sound speakers)that mounted with a bracket so there were no holes cut in anything, just two screw holes in the bottom.
I had them angled upwards maybe 30-45 degrees.
I used a Sony head unit (AM/FM cassette) with a 300 watt booster equilizer.
Those sounded good, but it sounded alot better when I put a couple of 10 inchers under the seat in home made boxes.
The only thing in my opinion that would have made it sound a little better would have been the addition of some good quailty dome tweeters,
in the corners of the windshield.
The more power you have, the better it sounds at low volume... and when ya wanna "Turn it up" as in Sweet Home Alabama...
You got the power to rattle the windows in the car next to ya...
O yeah ... that's what I'm talkin' about... :D
Toss on a little "T-Bone" (a christian rapper) and blow them guys away at the gas station who think everyone is impressed by the loud F#%* this and F#%* that coming out their rides....

Good Stuff Kaptn, never thought about mounting box speakers to the door... now I have to rethink my speaker plans, or maybe just add to them :hmm:

I still like truckguys headliner speaker setup:

In my '72 that has long been gone 15 yrs, I mounted 2 4x10's one on either side of the dome light. yes i cut sheet metal to do so. the are up out of the way the sound is projected outward and some resonates down the pillar tubes as well as out into that big giant speaker diaphragm ( if the head liner is in place and mounted right). i had a Craig power play cassette unit that had a built in amplifier ( about the best low price range unit you could get in '90-'91 it was going in a pick up for pete's sake). It put out an asme sound and in the day pre boom boxes would "crank" with the best of them. i've posted this method several times, but until i can get to that point in my project i have a hard time showing the theory or proving my method. I used to have a buddy that everytime we went some place in my truck would look under and behind the seats for more speakers. my reply was alway 'you never give up do you"
our trucks have one of the most natural boom tube effects of any vehicle I have ever witnessed. i discuss this with a guy i used to work with that installed custom sound systems on the side and he commented on how the idea was very probable after looking extensively at my truck.

I hung 2 6"x9"'s on the back of the seat. Lean the seat forward, get some wire ties and you're in business. I pointed the speakers at the gas tank so the magnets would not stick to the tank.
