Guys,
Have a '67 Highboy with a transplanted 390 (from a '68 Galaxie).
Has anyone tried any of the mini-starters and what was your experience? Where'd you buy from, assuming it was a good experience?
Thanks,
Pete

re: Mini Starter(s)
Try these guys for your starter. I bought theirs after trying other brands and found it easy to install and works great. http://www.robbmcperformance.com
They also ship fast and are very helpful with tech support.
Also for cables you may want to consider www.custombatterycables.com. I also installed them and really like them...

Thanks '67,
Thanks, what I was looking for. There's a bunch of different "knock off" Nippendenso and Hitachi's on eBay. There can't be that many manufacturers, of these, but once someone puts their own branding label on, god knows what it really is?
Just looking for a permanent alternative, as posting have shown the clones don't stand up well.

Re: Mini Starter(s)
Hey Pete, I also ordered the RobbMc starter (with part 2025, the optional pinion gear support). They shipped it out very quickly and it looks fantastic, although I haven't installed it yet.
I sent RobbMc a detailed letter asking questions about how to compare their product to the competition and got a great reply. If you're interested I could PM it to you (Robb asked that I not post it publicly since he makes claims about the competition and stuff).
Good luck!

Re: Mini Starter(s)
RobbMc is a whole different animal than the other guys.
He is an engineer, worked for Erson, Mallory, and a host of others and is one of our FE Forum guys.
When we didnt like the Erson FE rockers, based on our input, he got Erson to change them. He passes info to us on all kinds on ignition stuff, both Mallory and accel, and is just a regular car guy at heart that went on his own.
Those starters are first rate, and, you can talk directly to him. Feedback from the first round of starters got the nose option added, he also improved a bolt design.
He is good people, a regular on the FE Forum and if possible, go his route instead of Summit, I have seen these starters in action and they are first rate.

Re: Mini Starter(s)
I have personally meet him face to face @ my FE BBQ. What a great guy. He and his partner builds this stuff. I can say that it is first class for sure. I wouldn't hesitate to buy one at all. I think they are the best designs that I have ever seen! Hands down.......JMHOMy427stang wrote:RobbMc is a whole different animal than the other guys.

Re: Mini Starter(s)
Thanks for the reccommendation on the cables. Besides my '69 F100, I also own a '70 GTO with headers. Therefore, the starter gets alot of heat, and hard starting when hot. I have tried heat shields to no avail. I was planning to put the heavy duty cables on it when I put on the RobbMc mini starter I bought for it (recommended by a friend that has one on his '69 SS 396), but had not found anything that looked like the quality I wanted to invest in. These cables are the ticket. Thanks again for the "heads up".
