after market speakers 69 f100

hey yall I was wondering right now i just have the stock 6 by 9 in the dash. I was wonderign if any of you guys have after market speakers ? if so what kind , siz , and where did you put them in the truck , just tryin to get some ideas , thx guys.

Hey lt1impala,

I have a Sony 4x45 cd head unit
For speakers, I have a pair of small book shelf style (about the size of surround sound stereo speakers) mounted with [ <--- brackets on the bottom panel of each door...only 2 screw holes in each door.
They are mounted so they just clear floor and just forward of the seat corners
I have them angled up to get the best sound spread...
I took the in cab tank out years ago so I have some room behind the seat and have a 300w x 2 amp bridged so there's 600w going to a 10" Pioneer sub...
Gotta have a little thump in the bump ya know ...
I am gonna replace the door speakers with some better ones... I'll prolly go with some Pioneers... but the same style
the ones I have are Rad Shack... they sound ok but could sound better...
I am gonna add a pair of piezo super dome tweets one each side of the dash right where the windshield curves in to meet the dash... that spot is just cryin' out for some tweets...
I really believe that you get much better sound quailty from speakers that are in boxes and mounted, than you do from speakers that are mounted in holes cut in the doors...
It really depends on what you want your sound system to do...
Do you want it to compete with all the rest of the noise from the truck or do you want it to drown out the rest of noise...
When I'm crusin' down the freeway and crank mine up... there isn't any road noise at all...
just the tunes I wanna hear..

thx boss i have the in cab tank not planning to remove it but do you have any recommendations on the size ? thinking bout 4 speakers two under the dash with two some where behind my seat or in the upper corner of the cab , i listen to country to i do not need a sub , but some big speakers would be nice , 6 by 9's maybe? is it hard to put speakers in the door?

I put mine in the headliner. Simple, 4" 3-way Pioneer speakers. Sounds really good though. I can roll down the highway with the windows down and hear the music just fine.

dotn cut up your kick plates whatever you do. the two places that i ever thoguht of putting speakers are behind the seat ontop of the tank. which i havent tried or under the dash so the speakers point downward. just screwing them to the bottom of the dash so you couldnt make any hugh holes or have them in the way. the aftermarket headliners are a good way to go. it gets rid of the warpy headliners that our trucks had in them and i have heard they are a good sounding speaker. as far as putting them in the door. if you must do that i would cut the holes in the removeable panel and not the door. but you must remember that the weather is more likely to get into that area faster than it would if the speakers were mounted inside.

I've heard that the speakers in the LMC headliner are junk, but the idea is great..
I imagine that if you replaced them with some good speakers, that it would sound pretty good.

I'm just a music freak... and I like qaulity sound whether it's loud or soft...
There is a good amount of space under the seat...
If one was and good with wood working, they could make some nice boxes that could fit under the seat...
You might have to unbolt the seat to mount the boxes, but there is plenty enough to mount some 6x9's under the seats.
You'd wanna put a baffle hole toward on the side of the box pointing forward, and possibly toward the sides.
Don't make the baffle holes too big because speakers require a little back pressure to work best.
Instead of 6x9's you might also check into 8" rounds... they make a good all a round speaker... especially for lows and mids...

so if go with the under the seat speakers would i need to build a box for it or could i just get a grill and screw them down. also do the speakers come with the wiring or do i have to by those , and would i need to buy an amp? thx

Hey lt1impala,

You wanna build a flat shallow box for them.
You would have to measure to see how much space is there and determine the size of your box...
The box has be deep enough for the magnet and voice coil to have clearance.
That's why you don't want to let the magnet be in contact with metal... that will draw the power from the speaker.
Puttting a speaker in a box captures the sound coming from the back of the speaker...
nearly as much sound comes out the back as comes out the front...
creating a baffle which is basically just a hole or series of drilled holes in the box, lets you release and direct sound.
That's the principle of Bose direct /reflected sound technology.
Basically it just is controlled sound release directed in a specific way...
That's how they get such incredible sound out such small speakers
Speakers require a certian amount of air space to produce sound...
if you hook up a speaker and hold it up in the mid air and crank it up hardly any sound will come out.
MB Quartz makes some incredible sounding shallow 6" rounds that don't require much box space at all...
I had them in my '87 Civic with a crossover with MBQ super tweets mounted on the front piller.
In the back, I put a pair of 8'" Kickers in a box in the back with a 250w x2 amp .
Since the inside space of the truck is roughly the same as the Honda...
that's pretty much the same configuration I have in my truck, except I have the 10" sub sitting behind the seat.
If I keep the bench seat, I'll prolly mount a pair of 8" rounds under the seats or build a combo storage/speaker that would be about the same size as gas tank.. like the stock behind the seat storage box.

this is where i mounted mine but i do not like it it was a pain. but now i will probably add two more like it in the headliner and some tweets then something behind the seet to make it go boom boom jk about the boom boom part

I put some speakers in a box under my seat and it was a pain, everytime I hit a bump in the road(which in Pa. their is lots) the bench seat hits the box and it doesn't feel good on the tushy. I'm still looking for a good place to mount speakers without cutting my truck up. I do like the headliner spot, I never thought of that.

That can be a bummer for sure... that's why ya make the box really shallow, but maximize the use of the area by making the box as large as you can. a 10x10x4 box has 400ci of air space whereas an 8.5x8.5x5.5 box has 397.4ci...
both have about the same amount of air space but, yer much less likely to bang yer butt with the shallower box...
Just gotta keep that in mind when yer buildin' boxes.
If you don't have the in cab tank the best set up is making a box for that space.
That is my future plans...
Heck, you could go up to a 15 incher if ya did that...
That would prolly rattle all yer nuts loose, but might also shake all the rust loose from the rest of the truck...
