re: 4.56 dana
Depends on your tire height. My actual experience is a little different than most people. I haven't found the lower gears to be that much worse on mileage but the higher rpms do wear out the engine faster. I have had several highboys with 4.10 gears and got around 13 mpg on all of them, back when gas was good. I also had a 57 F-350 with a 312 and a 5.13 gear. I rwan it 65 all the time, not sure of the rpm but after about 30,000 it was starting to use a little oil.
Great ideas have always encounter violent opposition from mediocre minds.

re: 4.56 dana
willowbilly is right. It really does depend on the tire height. I had 35's on my '67 until recently and I've got 4.56's front and rear. My highway RPMs were only about 2750 @ 60MPH. Before when I had 37's, it was even lower.
Althought, with that said, if you've got stock size tires, your RPMs will be pretty high with a direct drive tranny.
