Installing bucket seats from a '79 Bronco

Post by Joe Kriston »

First, I'm going to see if my pics will attach ok...

Geeze, all I had to do was to read and follow directions and it worked like a charm...Hope my wife don't hear about this...

Anywho, I know there's been a lot written on this site about bucket seats, brackets and so forth...I just had these seats done, they look fabulous, the sliding tracks work, but it looks like it's going to take about a hundred dollars worth of spacers (mebbe not) to get them to fit snugly onto the floor...None of the mounting holes in the seats line up with the existing mounting holes on the truck floor...Plus, it looks like I need to raise the door side bracket of the drivers seat about two inches in order for the seat to sit level...Any suggestions on the best way to shim these seats on so they sit snug and level?

Also, I first aligned the driver's seat so the middle of it lined up with the steering column, then the passenger side equal distance from the door as the driver's seat to achieve some semblance of symmetry....It seems like I got a ton of room in the middle of the truck in between the seats, for like a cooler with a lot of beer, a VCR, or perhaps an end table with a lamp---stuff to help my driving concentration...Is that pretty normal for these old smaller bucket seats?...I think my seats are about the same sized as the Mustang type seats, but the backs are a little more contoured...Any other other suggestions before I turn my truck floor into Swiss cheese?... BTW, the truck will be getting new carpet and rust is a non-issue here in the land of the sun....Muchos Gracias....

Yowza! Nice seats!
Yeah, I was thinking you could add a third seat for the middle. Or maybe a TV console from the '60s, or a cot to catch a nap while on cruise control ;)
For spacers, If you used aluminum block, and "carved it out", they could be bolted to the floor, and the seat could be bolted to the spacer. Other than wearing out a file card trying to clean the aluminum shavings out of the metal file, it should be a piece of cake (spoken by a true arm chair chearleader). Another option would be steel box tube. The tube can be cut, reshaped and welded back up pretty easy.
Sure gives a lot of room for a custom console, or one of those folding middle seats with the console and cup holders built in.
I really like those seats. They really "fit" the look of your bump.

Thanks, Scott...I'm going to check out a metal salvage yard tomorrow that sells aluminum in just about every shape and form...

I noticed yours is an Explorer as well...Love that package...

I'm putting an 8-track in the original radio hole to keep the 70's theme, but once I get most of the interior done I was thinking of building some kind of console that I could hide a CD player and speakers in...Maybe I could do that under a jump seat...

It was too hot today, 115 in the shade, so I stayed inside and finished making my door panels...Got the driver's one put on before it got too late...The whole interior is going to be Model T black---except for the windows...I'll probably put black carpeting under the door panels...
