I saw they did this in a mid-60s C#3^! in Classic Trucks Magazine and I thought it came out OK. With a little fab work, it can be done pretty cleanly.

My plan is to internally modify an AM/FM stereo radio/cassette to mono, and then use a single 6x9 in the original mono speaker's location (the original speaker is 32 ohms, so not very useful with a newer deck - not too dangerous but it will be quiet)

For now I'm doing fine with the original AM radio and speaker, and am dealing with some of the trucks more pressing cosmetic and mechanical issues.

man i totally forgot this.

i had a 78 monte carlo that i drove for almost ten years. i didn't want to cut the doors on it. i installed boss home theater mini speakers underneath the bench, one on each side. they sounded awesome. i'll try to find a picture on my pc. might not be a bad idea to just put plain home theater mini speaks under the bench. i had mine attached with velcro tape, a strip for the hole in the carpet and a strip on the side of the speaker :D

blast!! i lost most of my pictures. i used to have a ton did a photo op for the sale. eh i still have a couple heres a little show and tell a before and after. man i miss her so much. ran across her in the ghetto last week on a paint delivery. bullet holes in the trunk lid, lights all busted out, fender smashed up, definitely a total friggin loss :pout:

WHAT! Remove the cassette player!? But how will you play music then? They don't make 8 tracks anymore!

I am swapping in a dash from a '57 Fairlane and plan on drilling a bunch of small holes (just like factory speaker covers) on each end of the new dash then mounting speakers under the dash like a factory setup. I realize swapping out the dash is not anything many will want to do but you could do exactly what I plan with the original truck dash. I haven't come up with a plan for the rear speakers yet.

There are "dual coil" speakers on the market that are designed to fit as a direct replacement for the original 6"x9" dash speaker. They connect to both left and right outputs of your cd player, cassette deck or am/fm in-dash unit for a stereo effect. One company that was already mentioned earlier in this thread, Custom Autosound, makes them. Another idea would be to cut a piece of plywood or mdf to the shape of a 6"x9" and then mount two 3 1/2"(or 4" if theres enough room) co-axial speakers to it and fit it in the original 6"x9" hole in place of the factory speaker. That is how I'm replacing the original 4"x10" dash speaker in another project. 8)

I am using two 3.5" speakers mounted in a piece of 1/4 fiberboard stuck to the top of a kraco with their magnets. Works great.

About a zillion years ago when I was young- the 1980's- I had two 6" round speakers on top of the fuel tank in my 1970 F100. When the sound quality, or lack there of, got to me, a buddy helped me make a couple small triangular boxes for them and screwed to the inside of the cab. Same buddy and I made brackets to hang speakers under the dash of his 65 f100. Both options worked pretty good. Fast forward to now, I doubt MY ears could tell if the sound quality was any good. Also, if I remember correctly, two 3" or 3-1/2" speakers will nicely fill the original 6x9 space in the dash.

In my Bump I'm using a pair of Pioneer 4"x6" co-axials mounted in the rear roof pillars. Yea, right beside my ears. The speakers are new but the rest of the system is old school audio for sure. It still works great and sounds good too. I sure don't need much volume with the speakers up there but I could still use a bit more bass. I might install a second amp with a gain control just to run subwoofers. :)

My '72 Ranger XLT has a factory installed or possibly dealer option AM/FM stereo, ( I love the little slide bar that switches the stereo from AM to FM and back) with speakers in the door plates along with the dash speaker. Came from the dealer that way and still sounds great after all these years.
On the ceiling I have what appears to be perforated fiber board ringed by chrome trim which bolts to the ceiling, also from the factory/dealer.
The dash speaker still sounds good but I have been thinking about replacing it with a "Dual Dash speaker" setup.
It has two 4" co-axial 40 watt speakers mounted on a plate that is made to bolt in same as the original speaker.
They also have "Under Cover" speaker setups ment to be placed under the seat. One setup has one 5 1/2" woofer and piezo tweeter. 120 watt. 3"H X 8 1/4W X 11 1/4 L. The other has an 8" woofer and two piezo tweeters. 200 watts. 11"w X 12 1/2L X 3"h. Kinda pricey but worth the money if you are heavy into music.
You can find it on page 198 of the latest catolog put out by Obsolete & Classic Auto Parts, Inc.

Hope this helps.
