Since the one piece plastic ones cause concern for moisture and not being for crewcabs, why not use or make a couple of these or something like it to use. It will house you speakers and might help hold the headliner up. Just an idea. Buy one and use it as a tamplate to make one more to your liking? This would also take care of the gap in our crewcabs. I think I will order one and try it when I get home. I will let you know the quality and function.

I ordered one, so we will see if it is any good or not. I know JCW doesn't have the best reputation, but I am willing to try this.

If you can find a fairly straight original, you can dye it just about any color that you like. I've had good luck with the spray-can vinyl dye(Plasti-Coat, Duplicolor, etc). I don't care much for the triple color combination that my truck had. White seat, headliner, & visors; Aqua metal; Black armrests and dash pad. My plan is to turn it into a two-color scheme. I'm going to eventually re-cover the seat with the black Ranger-style bench vinyl. I pulled the headliner and wiped it down with a towel moist with paint thinner, then sprayed it with a couple coats of vinyl dye. I cleaned the sun visors with soap and water and sprayed them with the vinyl dye too. I scuffed the trim with a scotch brite pad painted it semi-gloss black. I'm happy with the end result and the dye has worked well for me as long as I follow the directions. I haven't really used it in high-traffic areas like seats or armrests though. I would think that replacing those items in the color you want would be best. However, I may regret going to black with no A/C in South Texas. But it sure will look nice! :2cents:

Has anyone tried to take some thin MDF and use the old resin and fleece trick to make a hard/fiberglass headliner with say......a din sized hole for a cb or some overhead (small) speakers???? or overhead storage areas?

Man, I have all these ideas, but no $$$ and no place to work, not only that, I dont even have a bumpside!!!!

YET!

Somewhere, there is post for $10 headliners.
I did a search, but was not able to find it.
One of our members had made a headliner out of a textured type of fiber board that looked almost exactly like the orginal headliners.
He said it only cost him about $10 to make it.
If anyone knows which thread or post that was maybe they could post a link to it.

i currently have one in the makes. a headliner that is.

i bought a hardboard material, cut it to shape, molded the corners to fit snug with a old hole-less iron and spray bottle of water. i got it all molded up and have a piece of vinyl to lay on it and then put it back in, but havent gotten to putting it in because its a 2 man job.

ill give the headliner to Sangerdude if ya get my truck on friday, and maybe you can brainstorm with it.

The headliner is made of pegboard. It wasn't flexible enough to make the bends, so the two ends of the headliner above the doors are plastic lenses for fluorescent lights. Came out better than I expected. I probably would of redone it in black if it weren't for the lens covers. Cost about $25 for materials. All in all I'm pretty satisfied with it. Its nice to have a radio and speakers too.

i used 1/8 smooth panel board . should support speakers very easily.
look at my "how to make/mold a headliner" thread for details and how to mold it.
