pics of your stereo

Post by rubiranch »

I'm getting ready to install a new Sony stereo and Alpine speakers in my 72. I'm going to install the in dash stereo in place of the original radio and install the speakers in the doors. I also have a pair of small Hertz tweeters I'll surface mount on the A-pillars.

I bought a Volvo adapter/faceplate but would like to see what installs look like.

Thanks in advance

Rubiranch, every time I see pics of your beautiful truck, I want to kick myself because about three years ago, sitting behind the office at an auction yard was a nearly identicle pickup to yours---'72 F250 Ranger XLT Camper Special, brown and white with every available option---and only 23,000 miles...The only difference was it had the parchment interior instead of the black...The truck was absolutely gorgeous, and since it was sitting in the back, I thought I had time to think about it and I thought about it for about a week, and when I returned to buy the darn thing---it was gone...I still lose some sleep over it...

Anyway, it was the only bumpside I ever saw with the factory stereo... The speakers were below the door panels...I would hate to see you cut up your beautiful door panels or your doors, though it would be nice if you could find some original door speaker grills on e-bay or something...Of course, it's your truck and you'll do as you wish, just wanted to offer my opinion---YMMV....
This is the point...I'm....talking about everybody! I'm talking about form! I'm talking about content! I'm talking about interrelationships! I'm talking about God, the devil, hell, heaven!!!! Do you understand???? Finally!!!!

on edit, I'm installing 5 1/4" speakers below the door panels.

Thanks Joe for the compliments, I wish you had been able to get the truck because we sure have enjoyed ours.

The stereo has been the single biggest decision so far. I too HATE the idea of cutting the doors and altering the dash for the stereo, I am usually very anal about "altering" vehicles from stock.

We mostly use the truck to tow our older travel trailer and the AM radio just isn't cutting it. I've had the stereo for over a year and still haven't put it in.

We enjoy the truck a lot and I think a nice stereo will just make it that much more enjoyable.

Well, you don't have to alter the dash...you can simply bend the mounting ears back, so that a future owner can simply bend them forward again to install a stock-type radio.

Thanks BiggDogg.

I love everything about our truck except the AM radio.

And I will just bend the ears back, thanks Keith.

Rubiranch, it seems like it wouldn't take much for a trim shop to make you some replacement black door panels---then you can put speaker holes in those and save your originals w/o putting holes in them...

I wont cut the door panels but I will cut the doors below the door panels.

I think the factory door speakers were 4x6" speakers and they were mounted below the door panels. I'm going with round speakers instead of oval speakers because round produce better sound than oval speakers do.

I did get a stereo with a remote thinking that I was going to mount it either in the glove box or under the seat but after a looooooooong hard decision I deceided to mount it in the dash just for ease of operation.

I have a hard time thinking that I will ever sell the truck so all the mods are just personal choices, no one hates "cutting" more than me.

Idea, if you don't wanna wreck the dash with a CD player use a MP3 player. I did this in my Toyota. MP3 to a amp and out to the speakers. The MP3 player has a FM receiver built in it.

why not buy the radio from lmc that goes in the stock location with no cutting?
it is am/fm,tape and you can get it with a cd player. it also has the ability to plug those mp3 players in to it.
not a good pic but it looks stock from here

$$$$$$$$$$ :(

It does look great but they are on the pricey side.

This is what I have so far; I just picked up the JL Audio speakers today.
I've had the stereo and Hertz tweeters for a while. I am going to go look
at some sub-woofers and see about having a custom box built and where
I might possibly put it, if I can find a decent location I'll add a sub too.

Thanks for all the ideas.

I made a setup with some custom work on an original radio frame, turned out pretty nice considering I made it in high school. I ought to make another one and spend a little more time on it to make it look nicer, but it still looks better than most setups I've seen. I'll post pics soon.
