Trying to Order Gauges...

OK, so I am trying to order gauges for my F600 instrument cluster that I have. These are the style I like the best, but I have a few questions before I spend 500 dollars.

My questions, how do you figure out what gauges will work for your transmission. I have a 4 speed NP435 and need to make sure I can attach it to the gauge. My next question is what would you call a vacuum gauge. I would really like one in my cluster, but can't seem to find what I am looking for. Than if anyone has put these into an F600 gauge, what size gauges should I purchase. Thanks in advance for your help!

Its not fun mounting those in a 600 cluster. If you find a way to back mount them you will have no problem with the standard 2 1/16 or so gauges. If you want to surface mount them (though the holes) you will have 10 hours carving out the holes to match a nominal gauge size like I did which is the 2" and 3and 5/8 for speedo I think.

You can see how much of the gauge hole I had to remove. Seriously I have posted this before, I think I have 20 hours in this between the modification and the paint/body work.

Could I ask for advice on attaching my Teleflex/V3 gauges?

My questions, how do you figure out what gauges will work for your transmission. I have a 4 speed NP435 and need to make sure I can attach it to the gauge.

I believe that electric speedometers (if that's what you're buying--I didn't see many details on the linked page) are adapted to old-fashioned transmissions by using a "pulse generator." This is a gadget that converts the rotating wire speedometer output used on old-fashioned transmissions to an electric pulse that makes the speedometer go.

In the speedometers detailed specifications you'll find information on the style of pulse generator it requires. This will appear as a "PPM" spec', which I'm guessing stands for "Pulses per Mile." My Teleflex/V3 electric speedometer required an eight PPM pulse generator, for instance.

The package you're looking at may or may not include a pulse generator. The page says that the senders are included, yet it's plausible that they're not thinking of the pulse generator as a sender.

It seems like the majority of pulse generators are designed to screw in to GM-style transmission speedometer configurations, so if that's the generator style you wind up with, there are adapters that allow the GM-style generator to attach to the speedometer hookup found on Fords. Here's a photo of one of these adapters on my truck (note that this isn't a pulse generator; it's just a GM<->Ford hookup adapter):

My next question is what would you call a vacuum gauge. I would really like one in my cluster, but can't seem to find what I am looking for.

I've heard of vacuum gauges being called funny names like "fuel economy gauge," but what you're probably running in to is that the gauge manufacturer just doesn't make a vacuum gauge in the same style as the set you linked to.

Oddly, during my search for a gauge set I found that only a minority of the gauge styles included a vacuum gauge. I'd think that vacuum gauges might be more popular but maybe they're not.

I searched a little more and found the manufacturer's Web site (thanks for humoring me if this is old news to you--it probably is): http://www.classicinstruments.com/ I noticed that it says "Handcrafted in America" on the main page--very nice!!! Hopefully that means that the components were USA-made, although it might be an elegant euphemism for "Assembled in America" (out of foreign parts). It would be interesting to hear what they'd say over the phone about that.

I actually wasn't aware of this manufacturer at all when I shopped around for my truck--it looks interesting!

Perhaps you're already aware of this, but if you're using the Ford fuel level sender you'll want to be certain that the fuel gauge is set up to expect 73 ohms when empty and 10 ohms when full. The default gauge in that set may very well be configured for the GM resistance range.

Thanks for the reply.

I would like to front mount them, considering my lack of really doing anything with metal I might have 40 hours in trying to get it to fit properly. I was thinking a jig saw with a metal blade to cut it out, but like I said I don't have much experience working with metal.

I have read your whole thread! I like the way your cluster turned out it looks really good. Look forward to the most recent photos! Your thread has a lot of information, and seams like you have all the bases covered on this. I will take what you have learned, and try to apply it to my purchase. If I have any questions I will definitely seek yours and Fordifications advice!

A hole saw and then finish the minor cutting/grinding with a dremel or simlar tool. I don't think a jig saw will work very well with what you want to do. Just my

OK,

So the fuel gauge is 0 ohms full 90 ohms empty. Looking through Robroy's post, it should be 0 full and 73 or so empty. I might just purchase the sending unit anyhow because I plan to move the tank out of the cab anyhow. And will need a new sending unit.

I used a hole saw to enlarge the existing holes.Start with a piece of 3/4" plywood and secure dash to plywood with screws through existing screw holes
that way you can use the wood to center and stabilize saw,have the drill stick out about 1"past saw dont force the saw just steady presure.
Finish holes with a half round file. The larger holes you can start with the hole saw and finish with aviation snips and the half round file.
Dont get in a rush and dont force the tools,let them do the work.This is not a hard job if you approach it the right way

I like your gauges! I like your idea on how you did it. I will probably order my gauges about a week out from leaving here, I want to have as much warranty as possible when I go to install them. Taking a close look at your picture, is that a vacuum gauge on the far right? What is the brand of your gauges, I like that style better than the ones I have found. The kicker is finding a matching vacuum gauge to go with the complete set!

Thank's for the complement ,the one on the far right is an pyrometer it is a new from the early 70's
the others are S-W "black wings" they sell complete sets including speedo/Tach I think they have vac's
I found a boost/vac so they should.I got mine at Summit,so far they have been easy to deal with
