Is the half moon horn ring hyper???

Post by smittyj23 »

Funny way to put it I know, but I am trying to figure this problem out.

I put an original steering wheel on my 68 and put the half moon horn ring button pn. While driving if I hit a bump the horn honks. The other thing is if I am sitting still with the truck off and I hit the steering wheel the horn honks.

So I put the regular horn button on and it does not do the same thing.

So I am lost. Why does the half moon horn ring honk at every bump and hit of the steering wheel, but the regular horn button does not do it.

Please!!!!! Any ideas???

Im not the expert here by any means, but maybe just leverage from that longer horn ring. Possibly something worn out behind the horn button and the longer half moon ring is causing the leverage to pull it down and activate..... I dont think im making any sense

Your horn ring spring is wore out, or isn't made for your wheel/vehicle. It's sufficient for the smaller horn button, but not the larger half-moon ring. Sometimes you can stretch them out a little, but that typically only works for a while. See if you can find a spring from the same period truck at a pick-n-pull or other yard in your area.

tm: Are you talking about the spring that goes around the steering shaft underneath the steering wheel?

J, that would make sense to me... The spring that goes under the horn ring is probably not strong enough to completely hold up the weight of the half moon ring. That is why it works fine with the horn cap, but your moon ring makes the horn sound on bumps... See if you can find a stronger spring to put under there, that should solve the problem and keep the horn from sounding every time you hit a bump.

An overdue update everyone.

Someone suggested I stretch the spring under the horn ring. I did that with the same results. So I investigated and swapped the rubber bushing inside. Took the one from the horn button and put it in the half moon horn ring.

Problem solved!!!!

I hope this helps someone else.
