Manny's 67' F-250 Highboy Restoration

Post by Manny »

So her goes finally for a thread. IT'S TIME! So i have owned the 67' since 2006' drove it till 2014'. Alaina and i went on our first date in it. We got married in it. Daily drove it a while then the wear started showing thru. Wiring brakes etc. :cuss: So i said lets go for the restoration. That got sidelined with money a truck i built for my brother a 73' Super Camper Special, and then a 74' bronco. So now brothers is finished 73's sold, and the 74' runs and drives. Good Lord knew whats best cause now i have more parts, money, and ability than ever before. So here we go!

First day i had her. She is a two owner. a 67' on a 68' frame. In 1973 the cruise o matic burnt up and the 68' got rolled over. So 68' frame 67' body.
Image

Here is after the 3 year half tarped half ruined sitting in the driveway rotting. I started taking it apart to do power steering then got stopped and it got shoved outside. Not murder as the bed was kept clean and the cab roof was already junk.
Image

Can't tell you how much better it feels to have it cleaned up, and have it in the shop!!!!

Keep updating regularly now you guys keep me accountable! Plans are 429 thunderjet, zf5-42, dana 60 closed knuckle, dana 70 rear, ranger trim bedside box etc. Wish me luck!

Cool, best and worst day is when you start a project like this. Funny think is I chose to restore my truck after realizing I didn't have the skill to finish my '69 Mustang and wanted something 'easy' to learn on. Mustang's still waiting.

Thanks guys i realized that with projects i have done that i only have a couple really nice builds in me. Just so much trying to make them great they get tough like ranchero said. So this one is the one that i will always hold onto and i want to be perfect!! So first was power steering after all i tried that part in 2014 time to finish.
Old box off and out.
Image

A member here Tpdaniels has some great pictures with measurements for his swap using a 78-79 box. I am swapping with a 78-79 f250 box. The main thing i have learned from the 3 times i have been around this. None of these swaps go exactly the same! So using tpdaniels as a start this is how it went.
Top frame whoopydydo can be cut off but i cut it and bent it flat down with adjustable wrench and hammer.

Then lots are slicing on the crossmember.
Image

These boxes are heavy after 400 times mocking it into place. My biggest issues on the 67' was the pitment arm hitting the bottom of the frame at full swing. Had to grind the ear on the box, and ultimately cut the top rail to sink the box in will have to box it all up later.

That's got it close more later.

Thanks guys for the nice words. Here is more of whats got done on the power steering swap.

I used a old super cooling big tank radiator and a piece of a FE super shroud. I know a 429 shroud is smaller by what i've seen so hopefully it should work out.

Image

It is tight but it goes. A 1 inch body lift heck even 1/2" would work wonders may still happen yet, but the factory shot mounts it still fits.

Image

Used an old set of leaf spring bushings laying around to space it out for mock up. 2" is perfect and used tp daniels bolt hole layouts. When i box the frame tubes will be 1-3/4" then a 1/4" boxing plate keeping it 2" from inside of framerail to outside of new plate.
Image

All four bolt holes drilled but sitting on the 2 with the spacers worked out good.

What i got for right now.

Great start and motor tranny combination! I have a 429 in mine but would love to put the ZF tranny in for the overdrive benefits. Keep us up to date!

Sorry guys been out a bit with all kinds of stuff going on but did manage to go collect my pile of great stuff...
My dually now gets it's 4x4 stuff and the highboy gets a sterling rear and 5 speed.
Image

As it was a 460 chassis we just set the 429 up there to hold it still.

Ah yes the magic....

I hope he gives you the all clear!!! Lord took care of ya sounds like and you got the right attitude! Think of Frank Williams ain't got nothing from the neck down but still is in and around formula 1. As for the truck... Yeah lots of pages more i look and mess with.

Here is the steering mocking with a 78-79 drag link. Again think i'm going to have to clock the arm but should work with the 75 crew cab 60.
