460 swap starter questions?

Post by 68swb »

Ok i bought a new starter today and it is the one with the solenoid on it. The motor is a 429 manual 3 speed in a 68 f100. I need to know what wires i need to hook up to the starter and what to the solenoid on the inner fender which is now the relay. there are 4 post on the starter 2 small ones and 2 larger ones. i know that one larger one has the hot wire from the (relay) nothing goes on the other large one. and the 2 small ones, one is marked with a "R" and the other is blank with no markings. on the (relay) it is the typical 4 post relay on is marked "s" and the other is "i". so what do i need to hook up to what? sorry for the long post just want to get everything out there for your guys help.

If your taking about the relay (starter solenoid) on the fender well, NO... the 2 small terminals, one goes to the ignition to activate the starter and the other goes to the coil for extra voltage for start up... If your taking about the one on the new starter itself, I think it should still work just have to try hooking to one or the other and see which one activates the starter. (I would try the one marked (R) first...
If you can get us a picture of the starter and the terminals on it that would be great as I haven't seen one with 4 posts on it before... also year/application it was for...

Let us know how it goes.

 got it... I looked up the solenoid at parts america and found this http://www.partsamerica.com/ProductList ... r+Solenoid
It says: "Disregard R Terminal For Hi-Temp" not sure what they got going on there but sounds like you would not use this terminal...
So, I would hook it up like that diagram I linked to you before, and use the small one that is not labeled for the activation (start) wire that goes up to the fender solenoid...
See what happens...

Sorry not better help... the ones I have been using are off the later 93 models... but I think it should still work pretty much the same :)

If your talking about the larger ones = old ones like we have on our old trucks:
You would have to mount a solenoid on the fender like we have on our old trucks to handle the load that the starter uses from the battery, and wire to it... These new mini starters have the solenoid built into them... :)

If a guy want to clean up the wiring on going to the mini starter on our old trucks and you didn't need the "start voltage" wire for the ignition coil, you could just wire a 30amp relay to the mini starter for activation, and the main battery cable for power of course 8)

If your talking about the larger newer style starters that have the solenoid on them compared to the small mini starters... no need to change any of the wiring...
